We source our modal from the highly reputable Austrian company Lenzing AG, which has the trademark for "TENCEL" and is why the proper term for our Modal is TENCEL™ Modal.

How Modal is Made
Step 1: Harvest
Mature Beech Trees are harvested and chipped to create pulp. Cellulose is extracted from the soaked pulp. Beech Trees are known for being resilient so they can quickly regrow from their roots.
Step 2: Chemistry
The cellulose is formed into sheets, which are soaked in sodium hydroxide. The sheets are then broken into smaller pieces, which are soaked in carbon disulfate and produces sodium cellulose xanthate.
Step 3: Fibers
Cellulose xanthate is soaked in sodium hydroxide again creating a liquid solution. The liquid solution is put through a spinneret, which is a device with a series of holes that create fibers.
Step 4: Yarns
The fibers are soaked in sulfuric acid to form yarn. The yarn is washed, bleached and dried then spun onto spools. Finally, the spools of yarn can be used to weave or knit the Modal fabric.

How is Modal different from Tencel?
The main difference is that Modal is dervied from Beech trees while TENCEL is derived from Eucalyptus trees.
Is TENCEL™ Modal the same thing as Modal?
Yes. The proper term for Modal fibers provided by Lenzing is TENCEL™ Modal due to Lenzing owning the trademark. This can be confusing because Tencel is different from Modal. The proper term for eucalyptus fibers provided by Lenzing is TENCEL™ Lyocell.
Why don't other companies used Modal?
